Understanding Puffco Devices and Carb Cap Compatibility

Puffco has released several iterations of their Peak, Peak Pro, and Proxy devices, each with unique design changes that impact carb cap compatibility. Whether you’re upgrading your setup or looking to customize your device, understanding these changes can help you choose the right carb cap. It is important to first identify which device you have and ensure you are using the correct silicone tether, as this determines what carb cap styles are compatible. Below is a breakdown of Puffco's evolution and how it affects carb cap compatibility.

Puffco Peak Version 1: The OG Puffco Peak

The original Puffco Peak (often referred to as Version 1) came with a half-dome silicone tether, which was identified by its large ring. This tether was designed to accommodate half-dome shaped carb caps. If you have an OG Peak and want to stick with its original design, ensure you are using compatible half-dome carb caps.

Puffco Peak Pro Version 1: The Introduction to the Oculus & Ball Cap

When the Puffco Peak Pro Version 1 was released, Puffco introduced a new silicone tether that came stock with an Oculus puck/insert. This design allowed for a more enclosed experience but also added flexibility. Users could swap out the Oculus puck/insert for a ball cap puck/insert, which enabled the use of aftermarket ball caps for those who preferred that style and function. The tether itself is the same for both, but the housing of the carb cap is unique to each style.

Puffco Peak Pro Version 2: 3D Chambers

The Puffco Peak Pro Version 2 marked a significant upgrade by introducing 3D chambers, which improved heat efficiency and vapor production. Puffco's original 3D chamber (not the 3DXL) featured a stock Oculus silicone tether, much like the Version 1 Pro chamber, allowing for compatibility with various carb cap styles. Just like before, the carb cap insert that is held by the tether could be swapped to use ball cap style carb caps.

Puffco Peak Pro Version 2: A Shift to 3DXL Chambers

Recently, Puffco has started shipping all Pro devices with 3DXL chambers. The 3DXL chamber introduced a completely new silicone tether that houses a joystick-style carb cap. This was a significant departure from previous designs, as it no longer supported the swap-out puck/insert system for ball caps. Due to the added depth of the 3DXL chambers, most 3DXL joystick carb caps can only be used with the 3DXL chamber. Although the chambers have evolved, the width of each generation has remained the same. This means the tether of 3D chamber and the tether of the Version 1 Puffco Peak Pro can be swapped allowing the use of oculus and ball cap designs.

Puffco "New Peak"

The latest iteration of Puffco devices, commonly referred to as the "New Peak", was released with a smaller joystick-style cap. Unlike earlier models, this cap cannot be swapped for any other cap styles. However, for those looking to customize their setup, aftermarket glass joysticks are available and compatible with the new Peak. Due to the shallower chamber, joysticks designed for the 3DXL chamber are not compatible with Puffco's New Peak device.

At Empire Smokes we have designed out smaller joysticks to be compatible between the New Peak and the Version 2 Proxy devices.

Puffco Proxy Version 1

The Puffco Proxy Version 1 came stock with a silicone tether that held an Oculus style carb cap. Unlike the Version 1 Peak Pros, the oculus tethers do not feature swappable inserts/pucks. The entire tether itself can be swapped for a ball cap tether making it compatible with aftermarket ball caps.

Build Your Own Proxy | Puffco

With the Proxy Version 2, Puffco introduced a smaller joystick-style carb cap, changing the standard tether design. However, the silicone tether/sleeve can still be swapped with a Version 1 tether if users want to continue using an Oculus cap or ball cap puck/insert.

Our available joystick caps are compatible between the new oculus tether and the New Peak chamber.

Choosing the Right Silicone for Your Puffco

To summarize:

  • Puffco Peak Version 1 Silicone → Only compatible with half-dome carb caps.

  • Puffco Peak Pro Version 1 Silicone → Can be used with Oculus and ball caps, but requires the correct puck insert for each cap type.

  • Puffco Peak Pro Version 2: 3D Chambers Silicone → Compatible with Oculus-style silicone, which can be swapped for a ball cap puck/insert.

  • Puffco Peak Pro Version 2: 3DXL Chambers Silicone → Comes with a joystick-style cap. Can be swapped for the Oculus/Ball Cap Tether.

  • Puffco "New Peak" Silicone → Uses a joystick-style cap, with no swap-out options.

  • Puffco Proxy Version 1 Silicone → Uses Oculus silicone, but can be swapped for a ball cap silicone .

  • Puffco Proxy Version 2 Silicone → Ships with a joystick-style cap, but the silicone tether can be swapped for Version 1's oculus or ball cap tether.

One important factor to note is that while the peaks' chamber designs have evolved, the width of the different chambers has remained the same. This means that any swappable silicone tether can be used across compatible devices, giving users some flexibility in customization.

Understanding these differences ensures you get the most out of your Puffco device. Whether you're looking to enhance performance or personalize your setup, knowing which silicone and caps fit your device will save you time and hassle.
